Dr. Ludwig Oechslin´s cqa

We are delighted to present the latest timepiece from Dr. Ludwig Oechslin’s atelier in our anniversary year: the calendario quattro anni (cqa). A watch that precisely reflects our approach to watchmaking: reduced in construction, uncompromising in expression, and technically independent. As a 4-year calendar, it focuses
on the essentials—time itself—while bridging the gap between
our annual calendar and our perpetual calendars.

The calendario quattro anni is a 4-year calendar displaying the time of day, date, and months. The indices, hour and minute hands, decorated with white gold, are complemented by the orange seconds hand characteristic of ochs und junior, as well as the equally orange date and month displays, which serve as precise accents on the oj blue, circularly brushed dial. The cqa requires correction only in leap years.

The date is displayed in two rows, each with 15 square apertures. Each aperture corresponds to the width of one minute, allowing their edges to simultaneously serve as minute and second markers.
In months with 31 days, the thirty-first day appears in the upper section of the aperture for the first day. In the inner circle of the dial, twelve additional apertures indicate the months. The date is adjusted via the middle crown position.

The mechanics follow the principle of achieving as much as possible with as little as possible. The construction is based on targeted modifications and only a small number of additional components.
A precise interplay of partially intermeshing elements, a modified Geneva stop mechanism, and a specially developed cam wheel governs the calendar logic. A gear with three teeth manages the month transitions and delivers additional switching impulses depending on the length of the month: one extra impulse for 30-day months, and three in February. In this way, non-existent dates are mechanically skipped—without the added complexity of
a perpetual calendar.

As this is a 4-year calendar rather than a perpetual calendar,
leap year correction is intentionally not automatic. In leap years,
the display is manually adjusted by advancing the mechanism
fully to March 1.

With the cqa, we continue our line with consistency: maximum function with minimal means. A watch that does not aspire to do everything, but does exactly what it does with clarity and conviction.
